From The Vault: The Sandman
Not everything needs to be a musical juxtaposition or misdirect to draw out the beauty, intensity or drama of a moment. Often times, and more traditionally, a music score can drive and compel the visuals by directly reflecting the sentiment and emotion.
The Sandman, a short video following sand artist Joe Mangrum as he creates of one of his masterpieces, is a great example of this. There is no dialogue. Just a clean, well-lit white space where his intense colors and artwork are accompanied by a rhythmic, organic score. The short, stacato mallets and ambient electro synths come in and out with fluidity and help create feelings of motion and thoughtful flow. The heart beat and pulse are created with faster moving and slower moving music elements being played both in percussive and melodic manners. The music feels like what he might be thinking, it relfects his sincerity, intensity and focus. It sounds exactly like what you are watching unfold and tells the story without words. Well done.
